Do I Need Permission To Prune My Tree?
That depends,
If your tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order or if it lies within a conservation area, then yes, you will need to contact Rochdale Council and request permission to prune your tree. You can check if your tree has a TPO by asking Rochdale Council by visiting their website here.
Can I Prune a Tree Over Hanging My Boundary?
Assuming the tree is not subject to a Tree Preservation Order (above) or a Conservation order then Yes. You are allowed to prune back a tree that is overhanging your boundary. You should offer the arisings back to the owner of the tree and you should only cut back to your boundary. This does not give you permission to go on their property. We would usually advise you to speak with your neighbour before pruning their tree.
When is the Best Time of Year to Prune a Tree?
Winter is the best time of year to prune a tree due to the tree being in its dormancy period. Pruning a tree during its dormancy period encourages new growth when the tree's growth period begins. Pruning at this time also reduces the risk of infection from disease. Ideally pruning should be avoided in early spring, especially large reductions. This is because the tree uses a lot of energy to create new buds and leaves which if removed the tree doesn't get back what it has invested.
